EXCELLENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM

James Francis, based in Strabane, Northern Ireland, is deeply connected to the ancient tradition of working with bog oak, a rare and precious material found in the wetlands of County Tyrone and Donegal. The process begins with a meticulous search through the bogs, where James removes the wood by hand, carefully extracting it from the earth where it has been preserved for thousands of years.

The bog oak itself is a remarkable piece of history—some of the pieces James works with date back over 5,000 years, often preserved by the anaerobic conditions of the bog, which slow down the process of decay. This unique preservation process gives the wood its rich, dark color and intricate grain patterns. The natural oils and minerals of the bog imbue the wood with a distinct texture and strength, making each piece one-of-a-kind.

Through his work, James highlights the incredible beauty and history encapsulated within these ancient pieces, transforming what was once lost beneath the earth into stunning sculptures that tell stories of a bygone era. Each sculpture is a testament to the craftsmanship and patience involved in uncovering and shaping this natural treasure, allowing the wood’s age-old character to shine through in every detail.
